I. Getting Started

D. What do I need to start? - Supplies every Ranger needs

1. Weapon types
There are scores of most every different type of weapons in the game that any one could want. For a Ranger, there is no one weapon we are required to use. Try as many as you want until you find the one that works best for you.

a) Edged weapons. There are many types of Edged weapons out there in the Realms. They fall into a few different categories: Light Edged (LE), Medium Edged (ME), Heavy Edged (HE), and Two-Handed (2HE). Some common LE's include: Knives, Katars, and Short swords. Some common ME's include: Cutlass, Rapier, and Scimitar. Some common HE's include: Broadswords, and Long swords. Some common 2HE's include: Great swords, Bastard Swords, and Two-Handed Swords. The best manner to use edged weapons is by parrying and jabbing for position and balance, then parrying and slicing until your balance or position gets shaky.

b) Blunt weapons. Some common blunt type weapons include War Hammers, Maces, and Flails. To use blunt weapons best draw and bash them at your opponent. Some people us the draw/swing method. Do not parry or dodge before an attack, if you parry or dodge before attacking you will hurt your position and/or balance.

c) Ranged weapons. Some common ranged weapons include: Long, composite and short bows, as well as Heavy and Light Crossbows. To use a Ranged weapon you aim at your target, wait a little until your targeting is the best it can be, and then shoot at them. The closer you are to your opponent the more dangerous your shot can be. Although, at the same time, firing from melee has its disadvantages: your defenses are hindered when you use ranged weapons at melee, meaning you can get hit more often and there is a risk of breaking your weapon.

d) Thrown weapons. Some common thrown weapons include: bolas and throwing knives and daggers. You need to dodge before you use a thrown weapon, then advance to melee, then throw the weapon at the opponent. Many thrown weapons can be used as a melee weapon thereby doubling the number of weapon types you can learn from one weapon. A nice tip to remember, when you throw a weapon at your prey, and it lodges in them, you can then attempt to get it back if you are in melee.

e) Quarterstaffs. Some common staff type weapons include: Halberds, Two-pronged Halberds, and Pikes. A note here, staffs can break easily if used wrong. Most people start with a draw/bash combination. Ask other staff users what combinations work for them and experiment.

2. Different armor types
When you think about armor you need to realize that not all armor is alike, and each guild wears some armor better than others. Rangers are least hindered in Leather, but many rangers wear other sorts. Below is the hindrance list for Rangers and Armor.

a) Armor Hindrances:    L=Leather    C=Chain    P=Plate    (#'s are minimum penalties in %.)
Rangers    L-5%    C-20%    P-50%    (The skill used in reducing evasion penalties is based on your main armor (the one you wear like a shirt).)

b) If you wear leather armor, a plate helm, a chain greave, each of the armor types will be figured separately for minimum penalties. IE, if wearing leather armor, a great helm and a chain aventail, you reduce the leather armor down to 0%, the great helm to 50%, and the chain to 20%.

3. Here are some of the various armor types and a little bit about them:

a) Leather Armor - Leather armor is generally the least expensive of armor's available. It's light, flexible but doesn't protect as well. Training hindrance down in leather is much easier than other armors.

b) Light Chain - Light chain armor is not as flexible as leather, but it offers more protection.

c) Heavy Chain - Heavy chain armor is much more rigid than leather or light chain armors, but offers more protection.

d) Light Plate - Light plate armor isn't so much designed for flexibility as protection. Nonetheless, it's more flexible than its heavy counterpart. It also weighs considerably more than its chain or leather counterparts.

e) Heavy Plate - Heavy plate armor is the ultimate in protection, but also the most hindering. Heavy plate is usually more expensive than most other armors and weighs more than its counterparts in other armor groups.

4. General Supplies

a) A good place to start buying general supplies is the General Store (DIR General Store).

b) Some things you might want to make sure you have as you start are: A Backpack, one or two Weapons, Armour (That covers you from head to foot), A pouch of some sort (You can get gem pouches free at the Gem Sellers and are great for when you begin to hunt critters with gems), a quiver (if you plan on being an archer), and Weapons storage ( a quiver can hold things other than arrows, or a harness, a sheath)
