II. Game Etiquette Why teach me about etiquette, you ask? I want to be a Gor'Tog Barbarian with bad table manners. If that's how you want to role-play, that's fine, but even in this game there are certain, polite ways to act in certain situations. In this chapter we'll go over some of the more customs of the realms. A. General Game Etiquette 1. Grave robbing Elanthia's collegiate dictionary lists grave robbing as the willful theft of a person's belongings while they are dead. Now while grave robbing at the time of this writing, is technically legal by game policy, if you do decide to commit this crime do it with the understanding that the general population frowns upon it heavily. I strongly and vehemently suggest you do not grave rob. There is one aspect of grave robbing we must also touch upon. Using a throw away character. If you roll up a novice for the express purpose of grave robbing that IS against Game Policy and your account can be banned from the realms. In conclusion, don't grave rob; there are plenty of people out there to help you that you need not turn to theft. 2. Stealing Ah, to steal or not to steal, since the dawn of the realms this question has been posed many a time. The stealing skill helps in theft prevention. Stealing however is grounds for a person to kill you in realms. It is proper to ask before you dip into someone's pockets. To do this you can just ask if there are any open pockets. Anyone who says yes is allowing you to steal from them for experience purposes only. In this fashion you will be able to raise your stealing skill as high as you want it and not fear for your life. 3. Hunting Now when you are hunting, if you come across an empty room with a monster, feel free to flail away and kill the beast., however, if there is currently another adventurer in that room you should always ask whether you can join them in the hunt. Also, remember, just because you can't see a person hunting, doesn't mean they aren't there. They may be practicing their hiding skills by ambushing whatever it is they are hunting. This rule also applies to loot lying on the ground; if you enter an empty room and there is something on the ground that you want, take it. If someone is already in the room, ask first. The person worked hard for what is laying around on the ground. A short word about "Finding Things." One day you may come across a nice weapon that you realize no monster dropped. It was most likely dropped by a fallen adventurer. Etiquette suggests that; if you have time, do a quick run through of areas where Clerics and Empaths work in the hunting area. Ask anyone there if it belongs to someone. This is especially good to remember, because if the same thing happens to you, you'll be glad to get that weapon back. 4. Out of Character (OOC) Behavior Remember this is a Role-Playing Game. OOC behavior is frowned upon and can get you in trouble. If you wish to discuss anything that is happening in the real world with your friends Whisper to them. If you are having trouble with the Game Commands, find a mentor or an elder Ranger and whisper to them, do not discuss the latest football game, or mention that you can't type. Those are all OOC types of behavior. Remember your character is not you. Things that you chose for your character to do are In Character (IC). You as a Player don't have the ability to kill a troll, while your character can. The reverse is the same, you have the ability to listen to the latest CD on the bestseller list, and your character doesn't. Keep your character as IC as you can. You will have more fun if you do and so will those around you. |
