III. Skill Sets B. What about magic? 1. Magic is one of the skills that you must learn as a Ranger. However, this can be a bit of a problem. Guild leader Kalika requires new Rangers to learn about Primary Magic, but doesn't teach any spells until they reach the fifth circle. Before then, there's other ways to practice. The simplest way is to listen to a class on magic, which is unfortunately also the slowest way. Another way is to cast spells using a magical device, like a runestone. This method also helps you learn about Magical Devices. First, you'll probably want to FOCUS on the runestone to learn about it. When you want to cast the spell, RUB the runestone to prepare it, and CAST when the spell is fully prepared. Be careful with the runestones, though. They are fragile and will break after several uses. The best way to find a runestone is to ask fellow adventurers if they have a spare, although monsters sometimes carry them. When you reach fifth circle, you'll want to ASK KALIKA ABOUT MAGIC. She'll tell you about the spell books, you can then ask her about. She'll tell you which spells are available in each book as you ask. You can then either ask her about the individual spells or just CHOOSE one you'd like to learn. Once you do get a spell, using it is very similar to casting a spell from a runestone, except a lot more complicated. First, you PREPARE the spell, being sure to specify the amount of mana you want to use. Five mana is good for most spells. Mana is what powers spells. There's some mana in streams in the room. You can CONCENTRATE to see how much mana is in a room. This will help you learn about power perception. 2. The more you know about power perception, the more mana you can see and use in a room. There is also mana inside of each person. You can how much mana you have inside yourself by checking your HARNESS. Every time you cast a spell, you use some for this mana. The less mana that's in the room, the more of your own mana it will use. Your harness ability will determine how well you are able to utilize the available mana. If there isn't enough mana in you and the room combined, then the spell will fail. It can also fail if you don't prepare it long enough or if you're too tired or hurt. Once used, your mana will slowly recover. 3.
