IV. Survival Skills

A. Skinning

1. Skinning is a fun way to get extra money from most of your kills, not to mention it is required to level. All that is required for skinning is an edged weapon (preferably a skinning or carving knife) and a dead, skinnable creature.

For an example, we'll use a ship's rat to skin. Now, assuming that you've already killed the rat, what you need to do is take out your knife. Make sure that you have only the knife in one hand, and nothing in the other. All you need to do now is SKIN the rat (type: SKIN RAT). That's it!

Now, you may have or may not have gotten a rat pelt from this. If you did, great! If you didn't, don't be discouraged. It takes a lot of practice to get good at skinning. The only suggestions that I have for getting better at it is to keep on skinning or have others teach it to you.

There are a couple of tips I can give, however, for getting better skins from creatures. The first is, kneeling to skin. This helps because you will be closer to the creature as you skin. The only problem is that this leaves you vulnerable to attack, so watch out.

Another useful thing to know is that the Rangers can get a spell called "Hands of Lirisa (HOL)." This temporarily increases the Ranger's ability to skin, which allows them to get better skins.

2. Bundling

If you head to Falken's Tannery in the Crossing, just west of our guild, you can ask him for a piece of bundling rope, which he'll give you for free. With the rope in hand, you can take your pelts, skins and whatever else you might skin and BUNDLE them. This will make selling the skins go by faster. With a bundle, instead of asking Falken, or some other tanner to appraise and buy each skin, you can simply ask him to appraise and buy the bundle as a whole.

3. Arranging

So what do you do when you've stop learning skinning from a rat, and aren't quite sure your ready to move along to goblins? Simple, you ARRANGE RAT. Arranging is a special ability only Rangers can use, whereas the skinner will take what they have killed and put it in the best position to be skinned. Not only do you learn more from arranging (assuming you can skin the arranged creature), but the pelts are more valuable, since they're of higher quality. Be careful though, arranging takes times, and other critters aren't going to wait while you perfectly stretch out their slain friend.
