V. The Wilderness

B. Companions

There is a time in every ranger's life when, after they reach a certain skill level they acquire the companionship, if they so desire, of a denizen of nature. In this portion we will look into briefly into the two companions that are available at this time.

1. Raccoons

The raccoon is the first companion a ranger can acquire. It will take many days of training to acquire. When you feel you are ready, ask an elder ranger on how to proceed in your quest for a raccoon. Raccoons eat corn throughout their lives so always have some on you; your foraging skill should definitely be sufficient for this. When they are babies raccoons need to feel safe, so you must occasionally pet them to reassure them. Cherish your raccoon and take care of it and one day you will win the responsibility of a wolf.

2. Wolves

When you master your lore in animals as well as prove worthy. You will receive a wolf, the second of a ranger's companions. The wolf drinks milk when it is a pup and also requires the reassuring pet of its ranger. However, when a wolf grows it must feast upon the meat of animals. When your wolf grows hungry you can carve some flesh from some animals of the realms to feed your companion. If you carve some flesh and save it for when the wolf is hungry, never forget to smell it; after all, would you want someone feeding you rancid meat? Remember though a companion shares a bond with you so treat them with respect and dignity. Who knows where the skill you receive from this magnificent animal will lead?
