VI. Hunting

A. Hunting is a way to make money and build your skills, but before you run off to rid the lands of evil, you should prepare yourself for the task. When you come to the Crossing you are given "starting money" as well as some very basic equipment to start with (check inside the sack you start out with, who knows, maybe the weapon you wish to buy is already there). You should also check behind the curtain in the main ranger guildhall, older rangers put things there for younger ones.

B. You will need armor to cover your head, neck, arms, hands, abdomen, back, chest, and legs. Coats are a good starter and cover arms, chest, back, and abdomen. Gloves to cover your hands. Greaves to cover your legs, and a helm will cover your head. Ask around, some of these things can be found on critters.

C. After you have your armor, you should pick your weapons. I suggest learning a melee and ranged weapon to start. Melee can be swords, blunts or pole arms. There are many kinds of melee weapons for you to choose from and everyone has a favorite, you might even try them all if you wish. (See Weapons section) Ranged weapons are longbows, short bows, crossbows, and throwing knives. As a ranger you get a bonus when you use bows. Most rangers will make you one so you can save your coin for the arrows.

D. Now you have yourself outfitted, time to think of the way you fight… STANCE enables you to customize your fighting style to fit you. Evasion is how you dodge a critter, parry is how you use your weapons to block critter's attacks, shield is for using a shield to parry with, and offensive is for your attack skill. Play around with your stance; find what works best for you. For example, if you do not use a shield, you can put more skill in your evasion and parry by setting shield lower.

E. You have the armor; you have the weapons its time to find the critters! In the Crossing there is a shipyard with nasty little rats. Rats are good for starting. Once you find a rat in an empty room you must engage it. Check to make sure you are in PARRY, when the rat is in melee its time to ATTACK. Alternating your parry and attack will keep you balanced. If you get off balance its best to parry and JAB until you regain that balance. Once you have killed the rat, get out a carving or skinning knife and SKIN it. Keep the skins to sell later. If you don't want to hunt rats, you can find hogs, madmen and goblins out the West gate. You might ask a friend to hunt with you when trying new critters; it's always a good idea to have someone to back you up.

F. As you hunt you will find different things on different critters. Rats, hogs and goblins can all be skinned. These skins are sold to the tanner for coin. The tanner will give you rope if you ASK FALKNER FOR ROPE. You can then BUNDLE the skins and sell the bundle. Goblins and mad men also drop coins, gems and sometimes boxes. These boxes need to be DISARMED and PICKED by you. The gems can be sold at the Jewelry shop for coin. You should always visit the bank afterwards to EXCHANGE and DEPOSIT all your coins; thieves will be less likely to get all your coin if you do not carry it around with you.
