Gyar Sudar On the 20th day of the 5th month of Uthmor the Giant in the year of the Crystal Snow Hare, 335, a son was born to Traspen and Laeanna Sudar, Human Traders of Shard. He was named Gyar. Traspen and Laeanna were guilded Traders who traveled the Southern Trade Route from Shard to the city of Leth Deriel. Their specialty was exotic and fine fabrics. The common practice of the day was for husband, wife and children to travel together on these trading forays, stopping to camp along the way, if need be, and sharing accommodations with friends and family in the various towns and cities on their route. Traveling with a baby wasn't easy, it was necessary for the Sudars. Although Traspen had a wonderful sense of what fabrics would be most prized and sought after, he was not the best negotiator. Laeanna, with her beauty, charm and quiet ways, was always the one to get top price for their goods. When Gyar was still but a small infant they set off on what they thought would be an uneventful trip to Leth. The schedule was tight, as the goods they were carrying were required right away. The weather was not cooperating; snow was in the air and the temperature plummeted as they made their journey through the Dragon's Spine. They were lucky to catch the gondola but the ride was anything but enjoyable as the wind buffeted the car from side to side. Darkness was settling over the land as they continued their journey toward Leth, not stopping to camp on the gondola platform like they normally would. They needed to deliver their goods or take a chance on losing the contract. Good sense dictates that you not travel the Southern Trade Route near the Gash at night, but the Sudars pressed on. As they approached the abandoned guardhouse at the Obsidian Pass, a snarling, hungry pack of snowbeasts descended on the caravan. Laeanna managed to get Gyar into the abandoned guardhouse and returned to help Traspen fight off the beasts, but the pack was too much for them, and after a long hard fight they succumbed to a horrible death. Near dawn, a group of Elven Rangers came upon the carnage. They reverently buried what remains they could find. They were able to save a few items, including Laeanna's journal. As they were about to continue their hunting trip into the Gash, they heard movement coming from the Guardhouse. The infant Gyar was discovered bundled in a blanket right where his frightened mother had left him. One of the Elves in the hunting party, a young man named Graylock Bowsmith, took the Human baby into his care. He knew his wife Jenfia would love having a child around the house, even a Human child. Considering the horrible tragedy that befell his infant life, Gyar was a happy, lucky child. Graylock and Jenfia were kind, loving parents, and raised Gyar to be a fine, gentle young man. He was accepted into the small community and well thought of. Gyar sometimes forgot that he wasn't an Elf and learned the Elven ways of the mountains and forests. The time came for decisions to be made regarding Gyar's future. Graylock and Jenfia were pressing him to follow in his true parents' footsteps and join the Traders' Guild. Gyar was adamant that he wanted a life as a Ranger; after all, he had been raised with Rangers and that was what he knew and loved. Finally bowing to his wishes, they journeyed north to the Crossing and Gyar became a member of the Rangers' Guild. The Guild was good to Gyar. He learned well and grew in knowledge and skills. His one downfall was his love of the hunt, which sometimes left him scrambling to keep up with the other demands of the Guild. Gyar made many friends as he wandered the lands of Elanthia, visiting Shard, Riverhaven, Lagenfirth and Therenborough in search of exotic beasts and adventure. On one of these trips, strangely enough to the place that shattered his life as a baby, he met his true love. Hunting the Gash was the passion of many young Rangers, and Gyar was no exception. One particular winter eve, he was hunting with a few longtime friends when she wandered into the area. He was smitten. Lilithshade, the name rolled off the tongue, an Elven lass so lovely the sight of her made his heart race. Luckily for Gyar, she was also drawn to him, maybe sensing the hidden tragedy, certainly attracted to his veiled Elven humor. Their courtship was brief and they were married in a tree house north of the Crossing with a handful of friends and family attending and wishing them well. The couple took a house in Kaerna Village and became regular faces in the wilderness area, hunting vipers and leucros and giving aid to the lost and fallen adventurers they met, but the call of adventure and far away places was ever present. A short visit to Aesry Surlaenis'a became a love affair with the island for them. It was a Ranger's paradise with all its beauty and all that is needed for a Ranger to grow in the Guild. They have taken a home across the water in Aesry and can be found adventuring on the island to this day. |
