Mozzik
Memories are an interesting thing; major
events can be so vague, while at times I can remember the most vivid
details of the most insignificant thing. My childhood memories are like
that, my childhood friends are lost to the mists of time, but I can
recall my first game of chance with absolute clarity.
Ah, but I'm starting in the middle again! I have forgotten to introduce
myself, I am known as Mozzik Yavashkyo, follower of Fortune's Path.
I have earned many nicknames and titles over time, but these change
as all things do, pulled by fate. As a child I was simply known as Mozzik,
my family was poor and lacked even the right to a family name. I am
recording my memories here at the Jadewater mansion to be preserved
and shared with others seeking knowledge as I have.
Now I can continue with my tale: When I was young, about four years
of age I believe, I found a pair of wooden dice laying out in my families
fields. I didn't know what they were at the time, but I kept them hidden
from my parents, as I somehow knew they would be displeased. I would
stay up late into the night rolling them trying to find a pattern in
their results. For much of my youth this simple act of chance entertained
me, the other source of endless entertainment I found was the heavens,
as with the dice I enjoyed seeking out a pattern in the chaos.
Since I was from a poor family I had no real formal education; everything
I learned for much of my youth was from my own discovery. I kept crude
records of the results of the dice and the patterns in the skies, when
the moons and stars were present, their position and more. On reflection
I suppose my parents knew of my activities, as they kept me supplied
with paper and ink, even though I am sure this made their bellies all
the emptier.
My life passed this way in an uneventful manor until I was 17, living
the simple life of a farmer and making my observations in my spare time.
I eventually expanded my observations to include other things, such
as which crops grew, and which died. Two major events effected my life
at this point. The first was the death of my father. He passed away
in the night suddenly. The fact was that I had felt something bad was
coming but in my inexperience I didn't know what it was.
It was at this point that I came to two conclusions that would effect
the rest of my life:
1) There is order in chaos.
2) The one thing all creation shares is death.
These two things lead me to follow M'lord Urrem'tier. Many were shocked
to find out that I would worship the god of death, especially at such
a young age, they tried to persuade me otherwise. I ignored them.
They also lead me to have a very strong belief in fate, and that my
inclination towards chaos and patterns was my own personal destiny.
I told my mother that I felt it was time for me to leave, and my belief
in Urrem'tier made the locals encourage this decision.
I packed up my meager possessions, my dice I kept all these years, my
notes and some small amount of provisions. I took no coin with me figuring
fate would provide, and knowing my mother could not spare any coin,
the loss of my father and me was enough already.
This is when the second major event happened; I came upon a lone traveler
within the second day of my journey. His reaction to me was quite surprising,
he ran towards me screaming "Brother, fate has brought us together!"
I knew that this was not my brother, I was an only child, and he appeared
older than my mother did, yet I also felt a bond with him.
"Fortune's Path has brought us together, let us rejoice!"
he cried, with this he seemed to draw a circle in the air with his forefinger
and a glowing red line seemed to follow after his finger, forming a
floating circle in the air. He asked me to step through and told me
glorious things were to come. Normally I would have been wary, especially
since I had just witnessed my first real magic, but I felt compelled
to follow him, I assumed this was fate's way of providing.
As I stepped through the glowing circle I appeared outside the largest
building I had ever seen. "This is the Crossing observatory, it
also houses the Moon Mages guild. Here you shall learn the true meaning
of fate! Beware though, your are likely to find more questions then
you find answers..." He voice trailed off and he seemed to sink
into the shadows.
I never saw him again, nor did I ever learn his name. I was left with
no choice but to enter the towering observatory and see what fate truly
held in store for me.
That is enough at this time, perhaps if fate so dictates I will record
the story of my admittance to the Moon Mage guild, or how I earned my
surname and discovered the meaning of Fortune's Path. |
