My Path to Music by Shenney Morynna

My mother once said that even when I was little, I was always listening to a song that others couldn't hear. I was somewhat of a "surprise" child to my loving Elothean parents because of my Elven blood. If you traced far back enough in my family bramble-bush, you could see how a single drop of Elvish blood sprang suddenly into full bloom to create me. Standing a mere five foot and two inches tall though, caused me to a slightly odd-looking Elf combined with my black hair, blue eyes, and fair complexion. All this didn't matter to me though, because I grew up in the big, bustling city named Crossing and many people more odd-looking than I walked in its streets. Even after traveling to distant lands and exotic cities, Crossing is the home that I always return to. Crossing was where I first heard the song.

As the child of two Empaths devoted to the healing arts, I grew up knowing the dangers of what happened to careless or unlucky travelers and learned the simpler ways of healing wounds such has first aid, herb lore, and alchemy. But I never wanted to pursue a healing career like my parents, I always knew that I would pledge myself to the Bard guild. One of my earliest memories was of sitting in the Empath guild's garden as Annael, the Empath Guildleader, made sure I didn't get myself into trouble as my parents were healing. As I sat there, I heard a snatch of beautiful music that danced through the air upon an errant wind and I ran off to find the source of the music, unmindful of Annael's threats to come back.

Running through the door of the Empath guild into the outside streets, I was nearly trampled by the bustling crowds, but I once again heard the faint elusive song and ran on following the notes of the melody. All of the sudden the music stopped and I stopped too, bewildered at the silence. I glanced about trying to figure out where I was and saw a small building standing right before me. Curious as always, I entered it. Once I walked in, I heard the song once more and I gloried in the beauty of it's notes that seemed to touch my very soul. To my surprise, the song seemed to be coming from a broken cutlass on a maple stand. "Ahh, so you answer the call of music from Siryn's cutlass?" a gentle contralto voice asked. Turning around I saw the owner of the voice and met for the first time the Bard Guildleader, Silvyrfrost. She said, "I see the music that lies within you and when you're older, come back, for if Siryn's cutlass has called you, this is where your path in life shall lie. But first I shall tell you the story of fair Siryn's
broken cutlass." As her rich voice flowed and drifted through the air, she told of the heartrending story of Siryn's death and the founding of the Bard Guild in Crossing and I sensed that I had finally found my home.

Moments later after the story was finished, the angry figure of Annael entered the room and I shivered in fear of what my mother would say of my latest disobedience. Silvyrfrost, however, spoke with Annael and seemed to soothe her anger a bit. As I left with Annael to return to the Empath guild, Silvyrfrost's voice called out to me, "Don't forget that the music has called to you. Return when you're ready to unfurl your wings."

I never forgot the music that called to me and after a handful of years had passed, I returned once more to see Bard Guildleader Silvyrfrost and formally joined the Bard guild, opening a new chapter in my life.
