Eridal says, "On behalf of the mentors, I'd like to welcome one and all to Silverwood Manor. Tonight, Ambraisha and I, and the other mentors are presenting
the basics of the artisan skill of fletching."
Mahenna smiles.
Eridal says, "This skill can be developed by anyone with only a few
inexpensive supplies and a good bit of time and patience. Supplies can be
purchased from your local fletching shop including glue, fletchings, razors,
paints and paint sticks."
Bogberry nods.
Eridal says, "In addition, you'll need to find polearms like lances, spears
and halberds and a handaxe. These can either be bought at the armories and
merchants, or taken away from beasts toting them. They won't be needing them
once you've slain them."
Eridal asks, "Any questions so far?"
Mahenna says, "yes"
Mahenna says, "2"
Blumpkins vigorously shakes his head.
Bogberry shakes his head.
Eridal nods to Mahenna.
Mahenna says, "I tried a handaxe and I couldn't cut it"
Mahenna asks, "how come?"

Eridal says, "Mahenna, I will cover that shortly."
Ambraisha softly says, "Thought I had a handaxe with me."

critters, such as cockatrices."

Ambraisha softly says, "And them silly daggerbeaks."
Ambraisha giggles.
Mahenna says, "thank you, I thouggt maybe so"
Eridal nods to Ambraisha.

Bogberry merrily says, "not yet"
Locklesst shakes his head.
Eridal says, "To begin, first one must fabricate rough shafts by hacking a
perfectly good lance or the like into managable bits with a handaxe. It is a
rather routine process requiring only that you have a polearm in one hand and a
handaxe in the other."
Mahenna takes a drink from her peach nectar.
Eridal says, "You will, however, have to decide if you're to make shafts that
will become bolts for a crossbow or arrows for a bow. I use a longbow so I'll be
cutting rough arrow shafts."
Eridal says, "To demonstrate, I'll take this lance..."
Eridal removes a lance from in his black rider's cloak.
Eridal says, "And this handaxe..."
Eridal removes a handaxe from in his leather pouch.
Skipping lightly from cloud to cloud, the sun dances its way home.
Eridal says, "And CUT ARROW SHAFT FROM LANCE WITH HANDAXE just once. You'll
by instinct lop off the head of the polearm, split it into two poles, then
further split those into somewhere between four and eight rough shafts in a
bundle. Like so..."
With a single deft stroke of his handaxe, Eridal hacks the head off of a
lance and discards it. A second strike splits the shaft into two poles of
roughly equal length.
Eridal begins to lightly tap the end of a wooden pole with a handaxe's blade
until the pole begins to split, and he is able to simply pull the pole apart.
Repeating this process with the other pole, Eridal is soon holding a number
of narrow sections.
Eridal asks, "Does that answer your question Mahenna?"
Mahenna nods to Eridal.
Mahenna smiles.

Eridal says, "Ahh...now we have a few rough shafts in a bundle and I'll tuck
them away in my cloak."

Eridal says, "Next we'll need to pare down the rough shafts into smooth, and
hopefully fairly straight and adequately thick shafts suitable for decent arrows
or bolts. Paring these rough shafts is the first point where you may learn
something, finding "that was a little easier, perhaps you are growing more
skillful."

Eridal says, "For this step , let's GET 1 ROUGH SHAFT...and a small, light
blade like a dagger or knife..."

over to the lovely and talented Ambraisha...Let's cut a nock in the end of this
shaft that will fit snugly on the bowstring. I've now got a smoothed and shaped
arrow shaft from paring it down and knife still in hand."
Eridal says, "I'll simply CUT NOCK IN MY SHAFT WITH KNIFE...I'll have to
repeat this command if I've not painted or crested the shaft previously.
Painting and cresting are optional steps you can use to make your arrows and
bolts more presonalized using the paints and paint sticks found at the
fletcher's. I'll leave you to fiddle with those on your own."
Mahenna smiles.
Eridal carefully cuts a nock into the end of his arrow shaft.
Eridal asks, "And there you have it. Any questions before Ambraisha shows us
how to finish the shafts into arrow or bolts?"
Ambraisha softly says, "Would also like to mention, when making bolts, you do
not cut nocks into the bolt shaft."

Ambraisha softly says, "After the nocks, whether making bolts or arrows, the
process is exactly the same."
Eridal asks, "So no questions?"

sure your bolt or arrow fits your bow or crossbow. This is rather simple, you
just need to have your crossbow ready, and simply MEASURE MY SHAFT WITH MY
CROSSBOW, or like item."
Ambraisha softly asks, "Yes?"
