Welcome to my London scrapbook. These are notes from my trip to London in January 1999.
Want to go to London? This was the subject line on an e-mail message from my brother. And how could I resist? The fact that I didn't have a passport was only a minor obstacle. Fortunately, getting an expedited passport turned out to be a fairly simple process. I applied on December 18 and by Christmas eve I was officially passported.
Paul had special tickets obtained from a pilot friend on United Airlines. The plan was that I would fly from Los Angeles, Paul and David would fly from Jacksonville, we would meet up in Chicago, and go on to London. What could be simpler?
My mother dropped me off at the airport -- I assured her that she didn't have to wait with me -- and I went to check in. Oops! Several flights to Chicago had been cancelled due to snow. Since my tickets were for standby flights, this posed a bit of a problem. I spoke with the agent at the ticket counter, explaining that I didn't really want to go to Chicago, I wanted to go to London; Chicago was just along the way. It turned out to be no problem at all -- they could put me on a flight directly from Los Angeles to London. I made a few quick calls: had to tell my mother I had changed plans, had to tell my brother that I wouldn't be meeting him in Chicago, and had to cancel my hotel reservation in Chicago. I had no idea what I would be doing in London since I would get there a day before Paul and David, but at least they speak English there. How bad could it be?
Getting there is half the fun! Read about my flight to London.
