A number of items in London struck me...

People are so polite and helpful! When you go to buy a ticket on the Underground, there are people there to help you. When you ask someone on the street how to find a place, they all but walk you to your destination. If you're a boorish American who puts a wet umbrella on a post office counter, the clerk reminds you to "mind your umbrella, please."

The favorite color of the city is red!

It's very easy to get around! The Underground seems to get you within a few blocks of everywhere you want to go. And the same daily travel passes that work on the Underground also work on buses above ground. We never had any trouble getting to the places we wanted to see.

Cell phones everywhere! Everywhere you looked -- on the street, in a store, on a bus, on the Underground -- people were talking on cell phones. There were far more than I've ever seen at home.
