But searches on folks who were there show up as their still being there.
Does that mean they really can't shut it down if we're here? Doubt that,

And I tried to log on to Genie using Genie FE, rather than Online Servant,
hoping to force my way into SFRT1. But I got caught in a loop between

My last pass through SFRT1 was at Logon: 12/30/99 4:37 PM. I know I'm

haven't gotten around to us yet.
Nic posted on DM that Genie was officially dead as of 14:15 PST, but the ghost

Is it just me, or does anyone else think they're doing this the hard, i.e.,
stupid, way? Why not just lock the main door? I know that can be done; it
was done on a few occasions in the past for major housecleaning. Why do it one
RT at a time?
Stupid. Consitent to the end.

I find this really damn funny that this RT is still around...
...the reason being that they're deleting all the pages in order, but
generally speaking it went by 5s. They totally forgot about 471-473. Some of
the higher numbers are gone as well.
(Likewise, page 127 is still around even though all of its neighbors are gone.
The bulletin board doesn't work any more, but that ceased functioning almost
six months ago!)
Page 1320 (the Comics RoundTable) is still around, though.

In Bethlehem I had my birth.
Dance, dance, wherever you may be
I am the lord of the dance, said he
And I'll lead you all, whoever you may be
I'll lead you all in the dance, said he."

I'll say something serious . . . There were occasions when I could have made
points by joining an editor or two in mocking some SF writer. I always
refused, sometimes annoying the editor. This was an editor who could do
something for my career, and did, for a while.
There are many writers who would not have hesitated to dis me for brownie
points. Some of them were prominent on Genie.

Nina, <^^^^^^> I'd love to tell *them*. But unfortunately, it would be like
the one time I quit a job on principle. The plastic little tweep who was my
supervisor, whose blatant but non-actionable racism made me decide to quit,
listened to my full rant, and I did indeed spell things out, without losing it
and just screaming or swearing. But I told him he was slime, and why, and why
I was quiting, and what I thought of him.
Pure plastic; it rolled right off him. Nodded, blinked, pleasant little Ken-
doll smile never slipped. "I'm sorry you feel that way." Boom. It made me
furious, because there was no way really to REACH the rodent. And I'm afraid
the masters of IDT are exactly the same.

LAMENTATION
How lonely sits Genie that was full of people!
How like a widow has she become, she that was great in
cyberspace!
She that was a princess among the internet services has received
her death notice.
She weeps bitterly in the night, tears on her cheeks;
among all her users she has none to comfort her;
all her friends have dealt treacherously with her,
they have deserted her.
Genie has gone into dissolution because of bad management
and obsolescence;
she seeks now to be an ISP, but finds no customers,
IDT has overtaken her, pronouncing her doom.
The roads to Genie mourn,
for none come to the appointed RTCs;
all her topics are desolate, her sysops groan;
her customers have been driven away,
and she herself suffers bitterly.
Her destroyer has become the head,
her competitors prosper,
because IDT has made her suffer
for the multitude of GE's transgressions;
her children have gone away,
deserted to the foe.
From the daughter of GE has departed
all her majesty,
Her customers have become like harts that find no pasture;
they fled without loyalty unto the competitors.
Genie remembers in the days of her affliction and bitterness
all the precious things that were hers from days of old.
When her people fell into the hand of IDT
and there were none to help her,
the disloyal gloated over her, mocking at her downfall.
GE sinned grievously, therefore Genie became obsolete;
all who honored her despise her, for they have seen her
nakedness;
yea, she herself groans, and turns her customers away.
Her uncleanness was in her software, she took no thought of her
doom;
therefore her fall is terrible, she has no comforter.
O Lord, behold my affliction, for bad management has triumphed!
IDT has stretched out his hands
over all her precious posts;
yea, she has seen the IDioTs invade her sanctuary,
those whom thou shouldst have forbidden to enter thy
congregation.
All her people groan as they search for posts;
they wander the topics for messages to revive their traffic.
Look, O Lord, and behold, for she is deserted.
"Is it nothing to you, all you who left Genie?"
Look and see if there is any sorrow like her sorrow
which was brought upon her,
For vast as the cybersea is her ruin;
who can restore her?
The IDioTs have seen for her false and deceptive visions;
they have not exposed her iniquity to restore her fortunes,
but have seen for her oracles that are false and misleading.
All who pass along the way lay scorn on her;
they sneer and wag their heads at the daughter of GE;
"Is this the BBS which was called the perfection of online
service? the joy of cyberspace?"
The new management turns against her;
they raise rates, they cancel services,
they cry, "We have destroyed her!
Ah, this is the day we longed for;
now we have it; we see it!"
IDT has done what he purposed,
has carried out his threat;
as he ordained long ago,
he has demolished without pity;
he has made her users lament over her,
and exalted the might of her doomsayers.
Cry aloud to the Net!
O users of Genie!
Let tears stream down like a torrent day and night!
Give yourself no rest, your eyes no respite!

Other people dreamed of racing-bikes and cameras and guitars, but Anthea
dreamed of the wizard's windows. She wanted to get into the wizard's house
and look through first one window and then another because she was sure that
through one of them she must see the world she really wanted to live in.
