On the Power of Moon Mages

by little known thief

(Crossing, Zoluren: 11 Nissa 357)

While I may not be able to claim any great personal power in the world, I have been in Elanthia for a long time, and have seen it change in ways that never could have been forseen. In the beginning, I had no issue with the seers, except perhaps that of the other guilds, they were a bit more protective of their pockets. At some point however, I began to feel as though these mages were too powerful, and that they needed to be controlled. The reason for my feelings was that, first, they were stealing my business. Their skills seemed to allow them advantages I lacked in the art of picking pockets. On top of this, I had been in more than one run in with mages who quickly humbled me in battle, though they should have been no more skilled than I.

These mages seemed to me to have the best of all worlds, and how quickly they learned their craft! Mages scarcely beginning their training while I was considered a respected thief were gaining skill and surpassing me before I had impressed my guildleaders to even notice my improvements. On top of this the guild had attracted all sort of miscreants that should have been sooner attracted to thieving, but found themselves seduced by easy power.

I am glad to say that since that time, I no longer feel quite the same way. Recently a sister of mine joined the guild, and explained to me her hardships. She could scarcely fight, and was always penniless. While she found her magic skills easy to learn, the added combination of great amounts of lore and survival skills made training difficult. Certainly she would have advantages in battle with certain professions, but where magic failed, so would a mage.

I soon looked harder at the way professions seemed to be strong in certain matches and weak in others. While a Moon Mage might easily defeat me, a Barbarian of equal strength might easily defeat a Moon Mage. Yet I, with stealth and ranged weapons, could fairly easily outwit and outmaneuver most any Barbarian of equal power. Perhaps then, there is some order to the Universe. I do remember a time when we thieves had it better than most......

I do miss those times.....

Baresh will listen to your well-presented viewpoint on this, too.
