Submitted: 22 October 2000 Alone in a Crowded Town? by Sarosh Meher (Crossing, Zoluren: 35 Akroeg 363)Baresh was just scrubbing the lees from an oaken goblet when the door opened and a young human Paladin clanked in. She sat down at the bar, an expression of woe and discouragement on her dark face. "Baresh," she said, as she gazed the bartender in desperation, "is there no one in this town who wants to do anything but hunt and train? I have been here for a month, and I must say that most of the people I've met here--well, they are not the most sociable. Baresh peered at the Paladin and scrutinized her carefully. "What do you mean?" The Paladin sighed. "Well, I never get to learn anything about the people in Crossing, save their names. All they ever want to talk about is going hunting or how many ranks they have--though why anyone would want to boast about how much they smell is beyond me. "I've tried asking questions of people--where they come from, what their families are like, why they became adventurers, why they worship particular gods. I don't know many people in the Crossing, or anywhere else. I would really like to know these things. But the usual response seems to be either a giggle, a sneer or a comment that no one cares about such things...that is, if I am not ignored altogether." The Paladin glanced at Baresh, her ale-brown eyes filled with pain. "All I want is for the people around me to be more to me than just soulless golems, bent on hunting and training and nothing else. I want to see them as real people, with pasts and identities and families and beliefs. I want to get to know some of the people around me. "Do you know anyone, anyone at all, who wouldn't mind telling me about himself or herself? A trader, born and raised in Shard? A bard whose mother and father suffered greatly at the hands of the Dragon Priests? A cleric who would be willing to talk about why he or she worships a particular god? An elf who wants to discuss his or her culture? "If you know of anyone like that, Baresh, then send them on to the Paladin Guild. Tell them Sarosh Meher would dearly love to meet and talk with them." The Paladin stood up and bowed gracefully to Baresh. Moving swiftly, if not silently, she walked toward the door, opened it, and left.
