Submitted: 29 March 1999 The Huntress: Her Story Retold by Lady Galya Ilyse Hedeon (Theren, Therengia: 144 Shorka 357)On a fine spring day a week or so ago, my new Champion, Lorrek took me to see this statue of the Huntress deep in the forest of Langenfirth. Many people had questions of her, and all I could recall were the words in the book called "The Immortals". Lorrek, however, recalled the story and re-told it to me. "Of the statue of the Huntress there is a story told by Valkri. She was betrayed by her Queen and the queen's guard Arachne? The Huntress was a great warrior...and saved her king on several occasions. She was made the kings guardian, but the Queen was jealous of her, and with the help of Arachne, she executed a plan that made it look like the Huntress was trying to assassinate the King." "There was a trial and only a lone guardsman stood up for the Huntress, but the King believed his Queen of course and so banished the Huntress to the desert. She wanders in the desert, near death till she finds a cave, filled with spiders. The Huntress slays the spiders and drinks of their blood for nourishment. But alas the blood is poisoned and her soul rises up to the gods." "She is consulted with the gods and swears her revenge to them, against those that have wronged her and she comes down...and takes her revenge. She kills the King and Queen, her lone guardsman helping her, but Arachne strikes a mortal blow to the guardsman and he to her." "As Arachne lay dying, she drank of the blood of the Huntress and was bit by a black widow spider the poison of the spider and the immortal blood of the Huntress caused Arachne to transform into a giant spider" "So now in the sky is our lady the Huntress, with her guardsman near her eternally. And the rivalry of the spider ....forever. Second lesson....Even if you are the hunter, or huntress as in this case, you may at some time find yourself as the hunted." |
