Loss of a Beloved Bard

by Valquesta DeCarle

(Leth Deriel, Zoluren: 386 Nissa 357)

A tall, dark elven man dressed in leather from head to toe walks up to the bar leading a small elven woman. As helps her to a barstool it becomes apparent that her eyes are sightless. The man places several coins on the bar and tells Baresh, "Whatever she wishes." He gives the barkeep a meaningful nod and leaves the woman at the bar. Baresh slides an ale across the bar to the blind woman and wraps slender fingers around the mug.

"I've heard tell that you are the man to see if you've a tale to tell. Well then, Baresh, here is a tale." The woman takes in a deep breath before she begins. "You've no doubt heard of the bard Fellishan Silver-Griffin. I know he's been in here more than once and probably spoken of at least a few times."

Baresh nods to her as she continues, "Not too many knew that Fellishan had himself a son. A pretty, blonde headed boy child. He's very close to two years old now. Fellishan's only desire when it came to the boy was to be more of a father to his son than his own father had been to him.

"Just recently he and I went walking with the boy in the forests near Leth. We happened up a rather deep ravine, some natural wonder out that way. It fascinated both the boy and Fellishan and they spent long moments looking over it. I'm still not sure from which way it came, but suddenly we were attacked by large beast. I haven't the gift of sight, so I am still not sure what sort of beast it was. It was tremendous, of that there is no question. The beast made for the child, but at the last moment Fellishan jumped in front of his son and grappled the beast. The two fought tooth and nail for long moments, but in their tumbles the grew too close to the edge."

The woman closes her eyes and a painful look crosses her face. "Bard and beast fell over the edge of the cliff and both met a horrible demise at the bottom of the cliff. Fellishan's ghostly voice rose to me and explained that he had not replaced his last favor since he lost it and that the cliff was much too steep for even the most agile of clerics to scale."

The elf sits for long moments gripping her mug. When she speaks again her voice is wracked with emotion. "He spoke his love for his family, and asked that I keep his son safe and watch that he was raised properly.

"Everything he ever wanted in life was to be famous, a star. I intend to tell all of Elanthia of his heroic deed in the rescue of his son at the expense of his own life. I won't let his Walk on the Starry Road be for naught."

She nods her head in emphasis to her words and turns herself away from the bar. From across the room the tall elven man notices her turn and walks quickly to aid her. The two leave the bar, the woman's ale untouched, left with a lasting memory of a wonderful bard.
