Cross Country Odyssey
Spring 1998

Day 5 -- Fri. March 27, 1998

Well, there was a bit more snow on my car when I woke up this morning. But I didn't let it change my plans or anything. Today was mostly a travel day.

By the time I up and dressed and on the road, it was 11:00am. I knew it was only 2 hours or so to Kingman. I wasn't sure how long from Kingman to Laughlin, but I knew it couldn't be too long -- maybe an hour or two. Ha! Joke's on me. It's about 30 minutes or less from Kingman to Laughlin. And Laughlin is in Nevada which means it's on PST, not MST like Arizona. So I really got into Laughlin at 1:30 local time.

There was some snow and fog for the first hour or so. It would snow, get heavier, then lighten up, then get heavier. There were a few patches of fog that was pretty heavy, but it never blocked visibility totally.

The pass from Kingman to Laughlin runs through some really beautiful mountains and mesas. More beautiful than anything I'd seen since Flagstaff. And they were fairly close so I could see all different crevices in the mountain side.

I checked into the Harrah's where I had decided to stay. I unpacked and relaxed for a little bit. Then I looked up used book stores in the yellow pages. And there was one listed in Kingman and one in Bullhead City. With only a 30 mile drive to Kingman, I decided to visit that one first, then check out the one in Bullhead City.

So I drove back to Kingman and found the UBS. It was a pretty neat one, but didn't have a lot for me. I did find a book called Angel on Skis by Betty Cavanna. It was a book I'd read back in junior high and it brought back memories.

I drove back and checked out the one in Bullhead City, but it was closed. I may go back tomorrow morning and see if I can find anything.

Then I went to the outlet mall here. Most stores were pretty ordinary, but there was the London Bridge Candle Shop. I found a few goodies. It was neat -- they make a lot of their own candles right there so I stopped to watch.

I got back to the hotel and grabbed a bite to eat in the coffee shop, then came back up here to check in. And I'm now watching the Great Skate Debate. After it's over, I may go downstairs and try my luck at the blackjack table. We'll see. Then tomorrow, I'll head home.

Jules, who can't believe her trip is almost over
