Fan fiction clubs are the oldest form of organized Pern fandom. April Masters has
written an excellent introduction to modern fan fiction Pern fandom. If you are
interested in fan fiction clubs, reading it will give you a good idea of how the
majority of them operate.
While Pern fan fiction fandom is moving slowly into the online world, due to Anne
McCaffrey's requirement that fan fiction not be made available to the general public
via Internet newsgroups and file archives (and their equivalents on the various online
services such as America Online and CompuServe), most fan groups are offline
organizations that publish printed fanzines for their members.
A growing number of the fan fiction clubs maintain web pages and most of them have
active areas on
America Online or CompuServe for those of their members who have access to those
services. Recently, a few online-only fan fiction clubs have formed. These groups
operate like the offline clubs,
but have permission form Anne McCaffrey to distribute their fanzines (to their members
only) via email. The following is a list of known fan fiction club web pages.
(Weyrleaders, a link to form to add/update club information is located at the bottom
of this page.)
Like many fandom weyrs, Araby is a fan-fiction weyr. However, unlike most fandom weyrs, Araby's fan-fiction takes on a more interactive feel, where members will respond to their fellow's stories with interjections of their own. In the simplest terms possible, Araby follows a "tag-team-fiction" format, which makes it more of a roleplaying game than fiction. In this, Araby is (believed to be) unique.
Capri Weyr is fictionally one of the oldest Weyrs on the Alternate
Third Pass Timeline. Founded soon after the end of the Second Pass on the Sea of
Asov, Capri joins Sunfall, Sorran and Capri in muddling through on a world where AIVAS
was destroyed and the human, dragon and flitter populations have exploded. The Third Pass Weyrs feature an extremely active racing runner program as well as "live" Threadfalls. Capri is based online at AOL, but non-AOL members are welcome!
Cascade Sea Weyr is an offline weyr (this does include role-playing via e-mail with permission from Grolier). Thread is newly returned after the First Long Interval and the weyr was ill-prepared. Now it's up to a pair of young, inexperienced, and not-too-bright Weyrleaders to lead their weyr into the new Pass.
A newly revitalized club set in an Independent 12th pass timeline in which Aivas was discovered, but the mission to end Thread failed. Both online and offline memberships are available. Come play in the Weyr down under!
Crescent Weyr is a Mainstream 10th Pass Weyr located on the
Southern Continent and shares a timeline with StarRise and Igen Weyrs. The population
of Crescent is almost entirely made up of transfers from throughout Pern as Crescent
replaced Kieres Weyr, which was destroyed in a volcanic eruption in the 13th Turn.
Crescent's territory lies west of what was Ierne Island, between the Southern Weyr and
Haven Weyr territories. Crescent is an offline Weyr but has recently started
accepting online memberships as well.
Dawnsisters Weyr is a new (February 1999) DelRey/Anne McCaffrey approved fan fiction Weyr, set during the Ninth Pass. Our story diverges from canon soon after Aivas shuts down and Masterharper Robinton dies. Southern Weyr is still at Southern Hold and the dolphins have not been contacted (yet).
This is an ususual club in that the FSP has observed the explosion on the red star and contact has been made.
DragonRiders is set in 9th Pass Pern, but AIVAS was never found.
We use the
first Pern trilogy and the HarperHall trilogy as our core references. We
have Thread's End Weyr (on the Southern Continent) protecting Thread's End
Hold, Sonnette's Dawn Hold, and places in between...dolphineers, harpers,
tanners, herders, farmers, cooks, healers, riders...you get the idea!
Dragonsfall is a club that acknowledges AVIAS was found and the events in ATWoP happened exactly as stated. 1200 turns passed with no Thread and then the signs all began returning. By then Pern had become a male-dominated society with dragonriders nearly dying out before the queens began reproducing. In what would be Interval Turn 1203, Thread returned.
Eastern is one of the newest weyrs around, and operates as part of
Igen's A12P. The two interact extensively, and Eastern is looking for more riders
after the "Orange Goo" plague
Fort Weyr is an established mainstream 10th Pass fanclub. Like
other
clubs in our timeline, we do not recognise any changes created by AIVAS
and our dragons do fly Thread. We publish a quarterly fanzine and are an
offline club, though we have recently started an online forum for members
with internet access.
Set in the alternate 12th Pass, which is shared with Eastern Weyr.
As a club Igen is fairly young, less than 2 years old, and on it's way to becoming
one of the largest weyrs on America Online.
Ista is set near the middle of the Fourth Pass. The club is predominantly online, though we welcome offline members as well. It's still a small club so it has a very welcoming atmosphere.
Ista Weyr takes place in an alternate 9th Pass in which Canth did
successfully fly Wirenth and Ruth is not a sterile mule. Ista members are able to
write stories along a 35-40 Turn period of 9th Pass, with the only requirement for
inserting a character into the timeline is that you do not contradict another fannish
author or the books without the permission of the author in question. Aivas did exist
in this timeline, but has minimal impact on the everyday life of the Pernese.
The Kadanzer Weyr is an alternate 10th Pass club, set in a post AVAIS Pern with Threadfall. This is an active club with online RP's, monthly newsletters, and the quarterly weyrzine "From the Ashes" which is available in text, html, and hardcopy format.
Kahdena Weyr is a new club. We are set in the Alternate 13th Pass,
where Avias was discovered but was not able to help get rid of Thread. We do not
roleplay online, but we do offer two versions of our club Zine,Kahdena Sands, email
and Snailmail. There is no membership dues, but the Snailmail version of the Zine does
cost a small amount per year. There are still postions open, check out the pages to
see what is available.
Kerro is set in the Second Interval and located mainly on AOL, but
takes members from anywhere. With no Thread to fight and smaller dragons to wash our
riders have more free time than usual, which makes for a lot more fun!
Lakesedge Weyr is set in an alternate Eleventh Pass Pern where
Thread is still the menace it has always been and dragons are still needed. Five of us
(the exalted Council) got together to write The Story, an introductory tale of the
recent happenings in Lakesedge intended to familiarise everyone with our characters
and the Weyr itself. Lakesedge runs primarily as an e-mail Weyr with its members
contributing to an e-zine. Important events, such as Hatchings and Threadfalls, also
run through mediums such as IRC and ICQ. Members are encouraged to invent and make use
of their own characters, although you are welcome to simply sit on the sidelines and
watch the action.
Landing is set after the events of All the Weyrs of Pern and the
end of the 9th Pass. With the help of AIVAS, the dragonriders have ended Threadfall
forever. Now they must adapt to a new Pern where dragonriders will not be needed to
protect civilization on Pern from destruction every few centuries. The challenge is to
adapt the technology offered by AIVAS and still maintain the agrarian society sought
by the original settlers.
Logres is a land-based Weyr located in the middle of the Southern Continent, founded with the purpose of helping dragonriders become self-supporting now that the Pass is over and Holders have stopped tithing. In our timeline, AIVAS was discovered, but observations had already determined that the Red Planet's erratic orbit would carry it away from Pern forever after the 9th Pass; there will be no 10th Pass in the Logres Timeline. While the fiction of Logres tends to revolve around the Weyr, we have many well-developed Holds and Crafts as well, compatible with our goal to explore the dragonriders "going back to the land".
Monaco Bay Weyr, Alternate 2nd Pass, was once an Alternate 10th Pass club. After certain leadership problems, it passed into new hands and has been re-vamped (with the permission of Anne McCaffrey). Monaco Bay Weyr is located on the Southern continent, and over the past interval, the South and the North fell out of contact. But when the promise of Thread's return was growing, the only goldrider at Monaco Bay, weyrling Xylathera, realized that her golden Mynervath needed help. She discovered ancient references to a Weyr called "Fort" in the North, and, using several sketchy coordinates, three bronzeriders traveled North to request help. Hundreds of dragons and riders came South, but the tensions are running high. Please feel free to come check us out! Since we are so new, we have several available high-ranking positions open still, but don't delay!
MoonSet it located on the southern continent, near the old Cove
Hold and Landing. In our timeline, AIVAS and the other artifacts of the ancients were
found, but AIVAS did not work, so we still have Thread to contend with. Mundanely,
MoonSet is based on America Online, but we are always looking for members from any
service.
Northlight is the only Weyr left (much like in
Dragonflight). In our timeline, none of the events in the Harper Hall trilogy
or in the Dragonriders trilogy happened--AIVAS was never found, and Thread didn't
fall. The Pass has just begun (1997), and Weyrleaders A'lec and S'tefani are still
trying to pull the Weyr, Halls, and Holds together. The Weyr itself is located in the
Snowy Wastes, and there are two Holds (Northlight and Sounding Bell), along with a
Dolphin Hall and all sorts of openings for interested members!
In our timeline, AVIAS was never found and the grubs died off. The South was resettled, needing Weyr coverage. We are in Turn 30 of the 10th Pass, emphasizing not just dragonriders but the holders and crafters as well.
We are a club centered mainly around The Dragonriders of Pern
series and the Harper Hall series. AIVAS was never discovered, therefore thread is
still a menace to Pern. We have been around for over a year now, and while many high
level positions are filled, for someone who is creative and willing to participate, a
high level position is a possibility.
Sorran Weyr shares a timeline with Sunfall, Capri and Stone
Heights. Opened P05.01.01 of the Third Pass, Sorran is the western neighbor to
Southern Weyr, which was founded immediately after the last of the canon Weyrs on the
Northern Continent. There is heavy interaction
between Sorran and Southern as well as between Sorran and the other Third Pass Weyrs.
Sorran is based online with AOL, but non-AOL members are welcome.
Everything Anne's written about has happened. The Red Star was pushed away. It was believed this would last forever. That the Red Star would never drop its deadly thread into Pern's skies again. Over 500 turns have come and gone since the last pass of the Red Star. The large ominous orb pulses again in the sky, growing nearer and nearer. Only a very few believe it's going to come close enough. And those few are scrambling to form a Weyr where they can train their wings to fly against an enemy that has been absent for over 500 turns.
StarRise is one of the larger and more established offline Pern
fan clubs. Members of StarRise actually have two mainstream 10th Pass Weyrs for their
use: StarRise Weyr itself (set in the Eastern Ring Islands, that chain of islands east
of Benden on the maps in the Dragonriders of Pern books) and Igen Weyr (from the
books). StarRise has recently started accepting online members who will receive their
publications via email in additional to their more traditional offline members who
receive printed publications via snail mail. Online memberships are free. StarRise's
Falkenstone Hold has its own web
page and web forum.
StarStorm Weyr is an offline club, operating late into the second
interval of thread. After the volcanic activity in the South, the settlers of Pern
moved North, leaving much of their technology behind to be buried in destruction. It
was not until almost four hundred years later that men and women decided to again move
South. During this time, the dragons had gone into decline; often times Weyrs only
housed one queen each, and few bronzes. After an erratic interval the Weyrleaders
decided that not only was the return of thread not probable, it was almost definitely
not going to happen. Realizing this, they decided to merge all of the Weyrs into one
huge location, named StarStorm after the beautiful night-time sky of its tropic
location. The Weyr was built to house thousands of dragons at a time, including twelve
queens. The Weyrleaders were sure that this capacity would never be needed...but did
so to protect future generations from the (improbable) return of thread! Currently we
are almost at the end of the second interval. But very few of our peple believe in the
return of thread...
The newest addition to the Alternate Third Pass Timeline, Stone
Heights occupies the territory north of Capri and west of the Jordan River (across
from the destroyed site of Landing and the region in which Cove Hold will be founded
in the Ninth Pass). Stone Heights is the second "weyrling factory" on the planet
(Southern Weyr is the first), raising dragonriders to help stock the Weyrs required to
protect an overpopulated Pern from Thread! As with Sunfall, Capri and Sorran, who
share the timeline, Stone Heights is based on AOL, but non-AOL members are welcome!
The flagship Weyr for the Alternate Third Pass timeline, Sunfall
was officially opened on P04.08.12 of the Third Pass, on the Far Western Continent
(which actually has a surprisingly varied terrain) in a world where the human, dragon
and fire lizard populations have exploded and the people of Pern are trying to deal
with the consequences and fight Thread at the same time! Sorran, Capri and Stone
Heights share the timeline. Sunfall is base online with AOL, but non-AOL members are
welcome!
Telgar Weyr 5th Pass was founded in 1984 and has not skipped an issue of "the Telgar Times" since 1985, a publication record we feel proud of. If you want to join a club that you know will carry out its commitments to you, then Telgar 5 is your best bet! Come check out our web page to learn more about us.
In addition to these fan fiction clubs, there is the Jockey Club of Pern. This club
publishes no fan fiction. Instead, personas from the Mainstream Tenth Pass clubs can
own and race runners (Pernese horses). This group operated for many years on Genie
and now makes its home on the web.
