Dgn 39 was an experiment in production: The cards were produced on an office photocopier, and the color illustration at a commercial copy center using then-new color xerography. While photocopying the base cards allowed for great flexibility in design, the cardstock frequently jammed in the photocopier or didn't feed straight. The color pictures were produced on one sheet as multiple images, and then cut apart. The first commercial copy center approached refused the job unless proof of licensing of the image was shown.

The experiment was not repeated, although by 2000, color xerography had become cheaper and was able to print directly to cards, eliminating the need for the system used for Dgn 39.
