The Socialites

Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane are one of my favorite upper-class sleuthing couples. Their romance is rocky to say the very least--they first meet in Strong Poison when Harriet is on trial for the murder of her ex-lover. But Lord Peter doesn't let that stop him from falling in love with the intelligent, sensible murder mystery writer.

At long last, the PBS series starring Edward Petherbridge is available as a 3-volume set (Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, and Gaudy Night) on VHS and DVD! You can also purchase them individually. Check out the Wimsey page for more information on the shows. You can order them at Amazon.

Nick and Nora Charles made their first, and only, literary appearance in Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man. In 1934, Hollywood put them on the silver screen, pairing the debonair William Powell with the delightful Myrna Loy. America fell in love with them and they went on to make a total of six films, the last in 1947.

The Honorable Richard Rollison, aka The Toff, is something of a Saint knock-off, but entertaining nonetheless. He works outside the law to right wrongs the police force can't. The biggest difference between Rolly and Simon is that Rolly is rich and Simon has to steal, er, work harder for his wealth. Unfortunately, most of the Toff books are out of print.
