| Mystery. Adventure. Spy thrillers. I love them all. Books or films, it doesn't matter. If they pre-date the 1950s, so much the better!
My first introduction to the world of mysteries began in grade school. Nancy Drew, the Dana Girls and Hardy Boys, then Trixie Belden, and my all-time favorite for that generation, a lesser-known amateur sleuth named Judy Bolton. Then I discovered Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, and the mysterious Parker Pyne. From there, I worked my way on to Leslie Charteris' Simon Templar, aka The Saint. A close runner-up was The Honorable Richard Rollison, aka The Toff, by John Creasey. When PBS ran the Edward Petherbridge version of Lord Peter Wimsey on "Mystery" I became infatuated with the series by Dorothy L. Sayers. My favorites in the series are that include Lord Peter's lady-love, Harriet Vane. And who couldn't fall in love with the inimitable Bunter? See the Socialites page for more information on this series which is available--at long last!--on DVD and VHS. If you aren't familiar with my old friends, come on in and get acquainted. The books I review here can usually be purchased through Amazon.com. Just follow the links! There's a wide world of mystery fiction out there nowadays. I'm discovering new favorites all the time which makes this site a continual work in progress. And if mysteries aren't to your taste, keep an eye out for my favorite science fiction and fantasy authors, coming soon! |
